YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Several students from the Young Harris College music and musical theatre programs traveled to Rome, Ga., along with their teachers to compete in the National Association of Teachers of Singing student auditions. The event, which included singers from all over the state of Georgia, took place Nov. 2-3 on the campus of Shorter University.
Singers representing Young Harris College did very well, placing in several categories and winning in others. Applied voice teachers Karen and Sandy Calloway, Shelley Sanderson and Jeff Bauman all had students in the competition representing their voice studios. Students were accompanied by Anita Guss, staff pianist.
The following singers won or placed in their category: Caleb Nelson, 1st place in Junior Men (classical); Kevin Garland, 1st place in Senior Men (classical) and 2nd place in Senior Musical Theatre Men; and Kevin Rains, 3rd place in Senior Musical Theatre Men.
The following singers placed in the opening round and competed in the finals of their category: Joshua Johnson, 1st place in the Freshman Musical Theatre Men opening round and a finalist; Jazlyn Dingfelder, 2nd place in the Sophomore Musical Theatre Women opening round and a finalist; and Kelsey Ozment, 2nd place in the Junior Musical Theatre Women opening round and a finalist.
The following singers placed in the opening round of their category: Olivia Birkhead, 3rd place in the Freshman Musical Theatre Women opening round; Henrique Sobrinho, 3rd place in the Freshman Musical Theatre Men opening round; Teren Hooper, 3rd place in the Freshman Men opening round (classical); and Keeley Adkisson, 3rd place in the Senior Musical Theatre Women opening round.
