YHC Welcomes Accepted Students at Ready to ROAR

On Saturday, April 22, YHC welcomed thirty-one accepted students and 44 family members to campus for Ready to ROAR. Through this initial step in the College’s Readiness, Orientation, and Academic Registration (ROAR) Program, incoming students enjoy an all-day event designed to introduce new Mountain Lions and their families to life on campus.

Young Harris College Hosts Scholarship Luncheon to Thank Donors

Young Harris College hosted its Annual Scholarship Luncheon on Friday, April 21. This event is designed to honor both scholarship donors and student recipients in a celebration of education, inspiration, and empowerment. Donors were recognized for their contributions to the lives of so many YHC students.

Madeline Deaton Receives Outstanding Paper Award in the Georgia Academy of Science’s Biomedical Section

Young Harris College is pleased to announce that student Madeline Deaton recently received the Outstanding Paper Award in the Biomedical Section of the Georgia Academy of Science. Dr. Jennifer Schroeder, Associate Professor of Biology, advised Madeline’s research, which explored possible chemicals to treat or prevent metabolic issues like type 2 diabetes.

Young Harris College MAT Alum Caitlyn Floyd Named Teacher of the Year

Caitlyn Floyd, a 2020 graduate of Young Harris College’s MAT Program, was named the 2020 Pepperell High School Teacher of the Year She earned this honor during her fourth year on the faculty and credited the role of YHC’s program and professors in shaping her approach to teaching.

Young Harris College Announces Recipients of the Ledford Scholarships

Young Harris College is pleased to announce that Sophia Shook and Ashley Palmateer have been awarded Ledford Scholarships from the Appalachian College Association (ACA). The ACA’s Ledford Scholars Program offers financial assistance for intensive research projects to undergraduate students enrolled at ACA member institutions.

YHC’s Undergraduate Research Day: Showcasing Student Work Across the Disciplines

Last Tuesday, April 11, saw the eleventh annual Undergraduate Research Day (URD) at YHC. If you were on campus, you would have seen poster sessions, creative performances, and students from all departments on campus presenting the culmination of their research. For the first time in the event’s history, all thirteen departments from the four academic divisions were represented at URD.

Young Harris College Students Study Abroad at the University of Salamanca, Spain

Young Harris College students McKayla Milam, Helen Hudgins, and Morganna Oberdorfer had the opportunity to study at the University of Salamanca in Spain through Young Harris College’s Study Abroad Program in Summer 2022. Not only did this international experience with Travel & Education allow these students to explore another country, culture, and language, it also allowed them to earn multiple credits towards their Spanish minors and electives.

Young Harris College and Georgia Military College Pleased to Announce Partnership

Young Harris College (YHC) and Georgia Military College (GMC) have made it easier for GMC graduates to continue their education, working toward earning a baccalaureate degree. The articulation agreement, established March 9, 2023, created an educational partnership to better serve currently enrolled and future students at both institutions by creating a smooth transition for students transferring from GMC to Young Harris.

United Community Bank Provides Generous Donation to YHC Clay Dotson Open

On Tuesday, April 4, Mark Dotson, Young Harris College Vice President for Advancement, met with Adam Born, President of the United Community Bank of Blairsville, to graciously accept the bank's generous donation to the 2023 Young Harris College Clay Dotson Open Golf Tournament.

Caleb Thompson Places First in the Georgia Academy of Science’s Biology Section

Young Harris College is pleased to announce that student Caleb Thompson recently placed first in the Biology Section of the Georgia Academy of Science for his research on terrestrial isopods. Caleb Thompson and Dr. Kevin Geyer, Assistant Professor of Biology, have published their findings in the Georgia Journal of Science.

Young Harris College Announces First Exchange Students to Konkuk University in Seoul, South Korea

Montana Owens, class of 2025, was the first Young Harris College student to study abroad in South Korea. As an exchange student with our partner institution, Konkuk University, Montana studied for the entirety of Fall 2022 in Seoul, South Korea.

Dr. DeFoor Receives SACSCOC Award and Invitation to Instruct at the Reimaged Summer Institute

Young Harris College is pleased to announce Dr. Keith DeFoor, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and SACSCOC Accreditation Liaison, has received the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges’ (SACSCOC) 2022 Carol A. Luthman Meritorious Service Award. SACSCOC has also invited Dr. DeFoor to its reimagined 2023 Summer Institute in Dallas, Texas, as a Peer Instructor.

Young Harris College Welcomes New Counselor Nerissa Baker

As of March 20, the YHC Counseling Center has a new counselor: Nerissa Baker. Nerissa brings over twenty years of mental health counseling and consultation experience to YHC. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Georgia, a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in the state of North Carolina, and a Nationally Certified Counselor. She is also a Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist – Individual (CCTS-I). Her master's degree in Community Counseling and an Educational Specialist Degree in Marriage and Family Counseling are both from UNC-Greensboro.

Campus Gate Art Gallery Hosts 2023 Student Juried Art + Design Exhibition

Young Harris College’s Campus Gate Art Gallery is hosting the 2023 Student Juried Art Exhibition featuring artwork by YHC students. The exhibit opened on Monday, March 20, with a reception at 6 p.m. in the gallery. The student work will be on display through Thursday, March 30. The exhibit is free and open to the public!

Next week, March 27th-31st, is GREEK WEEK at YHC!

Greek Week is a spring tradition where Young Harris’s Greek organizations gather throughout the week to celebrate Greek life and its many contributions to the campus and beyond. It’s an opportunity for members to get together to do good work in and for this community and spend time with students from other Greek organizations. And though some of the events are open only to members of sororities and fraternities, many are open to those curious about what it means to “go Greek” at YHC. Greek Week kicks off this Saturday morning, with YHC’s Greek “Day of Service,” coordinated by the Rev. Stephen Soulen.

Young Harris College Celebrates Omicron Delta Kappa Circle Charter Ceremony

On Thursday, March 16, Young Harris College held its Circle Charter Ceremony for the National Leadership Honors Society Omicron Delta Kappa (O∆K), with over 30 outstanding individuals inducted as founding members of the Circle. O∆K President and CEO Dr. Tara Singer presided over the ceremony, joined by Young Harris College President, Dr. Drew Van Horn and Provost, Dr. Jason Pierce.

Dr. Chris Lay to Attend the Institute for Council of Independent Colleges’s Faculty Members

Young Harris College Professor of Philosophy, Dr. Chris Lay, has been selected to participate in the Council of Independent Colleges’s (CIC) New Currents in Teaching Philosophy. Dr. Lay, who has been teaching at YHC since 2020, welcomes the experience of attending the Institute for CIC Faculty Members.
