Young Harris College Selected to Participate in the Appalachian Regional Commission’s Appalachian Teaching Project

Young Harris College is one of 17 institutions selected to participate in the Appalachian Regional Commission’s (ARC) Appalachian Teaching Project (ATP). ATP is an applied research training program during which students work with communities to address needs affecting long-term economic development. Participating students spend a semester developing projects to meet those needs, which they present at ARC’s annual ATP Symposium.

Young Harris College to Host Annual Fall Fest Thursday, October 28

Young Harris College invites the community to attend Fall Fest Thursday, October 28 from 6 - 8 p.m. The event is open to the public and promises to be a fun-filled experience for all ages. The College’s main plaza will be full of Halloween games, trick-or-treating, activities, and photo opportunities to capture pictures of the best Halloween costumes.

YHC’s Anne Towns Earns the 2021 Vulcan Teaching Excellence Award

Young Harris College announced that Associate Professor of Theatre Anne Towns earned the 2021 Vulcan Teaching Excellence Award. The $1,000 award is sponsored by Vulcan Materials Company. It was established in 1991 to honor outstanding professors on select member campuses of the Georgia Independent College Association.

Young Harris College Hosts Leadership Union

Young Harris College recently welcomed the 2021 Leadership Union class to its campus. Leadership Union is a program of the Blairsville-Union County Chamber of Commerce. The purpose of the program is to develop leaders in the area to reach a higher quality of community life.

Kurt Mueller Named the 2021 Woodward Scholar at Young Harris College

Kurt Mueller, a 2021 Young Harris College graduate from Woodstock, Georgia, received the Beverly Barrow Woodward, 1953, Endowed Scholarship, which was established by Leonard and Beverly Woodward of Rome, Georgia, and is granted annually to one YHC student to study abroad in England at Harlaxton College.

YHC’s Board of Trustees Elects Three New Trustees and Welcomes New Alumni Board President

At the most recent board meeting, Young Harris College’s Board of Trustees elected Derek B. Goshay, Rev. D. Thad Haygood, 1992, and William B. “Bill” Jones as new trustees, and the Board welcomed Jane Roberts, 1970, as Alumni Board President and an ex-officio trustee.

Hiawassee’s Ethel Winters Honors Late Husband with Gift to YHC

Young Harris College recently received a gift from long-time donor Ethel Winters of Hiawassee, Georgia as a contribution to the Edward W. Winters Scholarship.

YHC’s Rollins Planetarium Presents “From Earth to the Universe”

The O. Wayne Rollins Planetarium at Young Harris College will host “From Earth to the Universe” on Friday, September 17, 2021 at 8 p.m. The Planetarium is housed in the Maxwell Center for Mathematics and Sciences on the YHC campus, which is located at 1 College Street, Young Harris, Georgia. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children, and is free for YHC students and employees.

Young Harris College Holds COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic

On Thursday, August 26, Young Harris College partnered with the Towns County Health Department to hold its first COVID-19 vaccination clinic of the 2021-2022 academic year. All YHC students and employees were invited to participate. Sixty-six individuals attended the clinic and received a dose of the FDA-approved Pfizer vaccine.

YHC Now Offers a Financial Planning Minor, a Board-Registered Program in Financial Planning

Young Harris College has been approved by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (CFP Board) to provide a new financial planning minor program.

YHC Student to Intern with Appalachia Georgia Friends of the Bears

YHC student Jillian Dixon is interning for the Appalachia Georgia Friends of the Bears (AGFB) to acquire and compile public data from county agencies in Georgia on road-killed black bears to help shape wildlife policy.

YHC Prepares to Welcome Students for the 2021-2022 Academic Year

In preparation for the 2021-2022 academic year at Young Harris College, new and returning students will begin moving in Monday, August 9. Based on their class year, students will continue moving in through Sunday, August 15. The first day of classes for the new academic year is Monday, August 16.

YHC Focuses on Lifelong Literacy After Attending AAC&U’s Summer Institute

Young Harris College was one of only three institutions in Georgia, and the only private college, to be selected by the Association of American Colleges and Universities to participate in this summer’s Institute on High-Impact Practices and Student Success. The five-person team consisted of Dr. Theresa Spanella, Dr. Jennifer Hallett, Dr. Linda Jones, Jackie Lewis-Burton, and Lundon Addison.

Private, nonprofit colleges and universities, including Young Harris College, play significant roles in the everyday lives of those living and working in college communities and are important contributors to the nation as a whole. In fact, a recent report from the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) found that America’s private, nonprofit colleges and universities are a vital economic engine to the nation, generating $591.5 billion in economic impact in 2018-2019.

Young Harris College’s Classes of 2020 and 2021 Earn 411 Degrees

Young Harris College conferred 381 undergraduate degrees and 30 master’s degrees on graduates participating in the College’s Commencement Ceremonies this past May.

YHC Thanks Supporters of the 2021 Clay Dotson Open

On Monday, May 17, Young Harris College hosted the 17th annual Clay Dotson Open golf tournament at Brasstown Valley Resort to raise money for student scholarships. A total of 127 golfers played in the tournament, which raised more than $70,000.
