Enjoy Free Admission to The Princely Players on March 21

Young Harris College invites the community to a free performance by The Princely Players on Thursday, March 21 at 7 p.m. in Glenn-McGinnis Hall on the YHC campus, which is located at 1 College St., Young Harris, Ga. 30582. This event will serve as the 2019Heinze and Ragsdale Endowed Lecture.The Princely Players tell the story of the centuries-old struggle for freedom by Africans in America, culminating in the civil rights movement and continuing even today. Since 1967, this ensemble from Nashville, Tenn., has performed a unique program of spirituals, work songs, hymns and songs of freedom. Examples include "Amazing Grace," "Steal Away," "Swing Low Sweet Chariot," "Go Down Moses" and "Wade in the Water.”

YHC Faculty Member Publishes First Book

Young Harris College Assistant Professor of Communication Studies Dr. Kathryn Montalbano recently published her first book, “Government Surveillance of Religious Expression: Mormons, Quakers, and Muslims in the United States.”

YHC Student Creates New Logo for Towns County Conventions and Visitors Bureau

Young Harris College senior Shelby Lawrence of Eatonton, Ga., won first place in a competition to design the new logo for the Towns County Conventions and Visitors Bureau (TCCVB). Lawrence presented her winning design at the Town’s County Commissioner’s meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Upcoming Planetarium Events at Young Harris College

On Friday, March 22, Young Harris College will host two shows at the O. Wayne Rollins Planetarium, as well as an open house at theYHC Observatory.These planetarium events are open to the public. Each planetarium show costs $5 for adults, $3 for children and is free for YHC students, faculty and staff. To purchase tickets in advance, visit yhc.edu/planetarium.

YHC Presents March Fine Arts Events

YHC Students Attend Educational Conference

Young Harris College students Taylor Anderson and McKenna Maulden were the only two undergraduate students to attend a conference hosted by the American Educational Studies Association (AESA) in Greenville, S.C. this past November.

YHC Shines at Georgia Music Educators Association Conference

Young Harris College’s Department of Music recently participated in the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) In-Service Conference in Athens, Ga. Representatives of YHC included 32 music education students, seven music faculty members and multiple music education alumni.

YHC Breaks Ground on New Band Building

On Tuesday, Feb. 12, Young Harris College broke ground on a new band building. The facility will be constructed behind the campus’s Fine Arts Annex, which is across the street from Sharp Memorial United Methodist Church. The lead financial gift for the new building was provided by YHC Trustee Pam Rollins.

YHC Awards First Bass Fishing Scholarships

Young Harris College recently awarded bass fishing scholarships to Mason McCoy from Mount Paran Christian School in Kennesaw, Ga., and Marshall Harrelson from Tallulah Falls School in Tallulah Falls, Ga. Previously a club team, the YHC bass fishing team will begin competing as an official athletic team for the College in the 2019 – 2020 academic year. Associate Professor of Biology Johnathan Davis, Ph.D., who has a degree in wildlife and fisheries science, will continue serving as the faculty advisor for the YHC bass fishing team.

2019 YHC Graduate Awarded Prestigious Davies-Jackson Scholarship

Young Harris College graduate Alejandro Lemus-Gomez, ’19, was recently awarded the Davies-Jackson Scholarship to study at St. John’s College at the University of Cambridge in England. The scholarship provides a unique opportunity for students with exceptional academic records who are among the first generation in their families to graduate from college. With only 28 recipients between 1990 and 2018, the Davies-Jackson Scholarship is a prestigious and rare honor. Lemus-Gomez is the first student from YHC to earn the scholarship and only the third from a college in Georgia.

YHC to Host Book Launch for Poet Chelsea Rathburn

Young Harris College will host a book launch for Assistant Professor of English and Director of Creative Writing Chelsea Rathburn to celebrate her newest collection "Still Life With Mother and Knife" on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 5 p.m. The event will take place in the Rollins Campus Center’s Hatcher Dining Room on YHC’s campus, which is located at 1 College Street, Young Harris, Ga. 30582. This event is free and open to the public.

YHC Presents February Fine Arts Events

Events include the Valentine’s Day Cabaret Fundraiser, the Theatre Mainstage performance of Oklahoma! by Rodgers and Hammerstein, the Mu Phi Epsilon Member Recital and an art exhibit featuring the works of Karen Schwartz. YHC Hosts the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police District 9 Meeting

Young Harris College recently hosted the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police (GACP) District 9 Meeting. District 9 includes 24 counties throughout North Georgia. Chiefs of police, officers and executives from law enforcement agencies across District 9 attended the meeting for training purposes and to discuss other GACP business.

Randy Dunn Accepts New Role at YHC

YHC Director of Athletics Randy Dunn will be resigning his position Feb. 1 and accepting a new role at YHC as the director of athletics fundraising.

YHC Campus Gate Art Gallery Opens New Exhibit

The Campus Gate Art Gallery (CGAG) at Young Harris College is pleased to present the works of Karen Schwartz. The exhibit will open Thursday, Jan. 24 with a reception at 6 p.m. Schwartz’s exhibit will be on display through Friday, Mar. 1 during regular gallery hours (Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.). The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public.

YHC High School Honor Band Clinic Offers Three Free Concerts

As part of the upcoming Young Harris College High School Honor Band Clinic, YHC will host three concerts that are free and open to the public. The first is a guest concert by the Ringgold High School Wind Symphony on Friday, Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. On Saturday, Jan. 19, the YHC Concert Band and Brass Choir will perform at 12:30 p.m. and the YHC High School Honor Band will perform at 6:30 p.m. All three concerts will take place in Glenn~McGinnis Hall on the YHC campus, which is located at 1 College Street, Young Harris, Ga. 30582.

New Planetarium Show Comes to Young Harris College

Young Harris College will host “Phantom of the Universe” at the O. Wayne Rollins Planetarium at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18, Friday, Jan. 25, Friday, Feb. 15 and Friday, Feb. 22. The planetarium is housed in the Maxwell Center for Mathematics and Sciences on the YHC campus, which is located at 1 College Street, Young Harris, Ga. 30582. Each planetarium show costs $5 for adults, $3 for children and is free for YHC students, faculty and staff. All shows are open to the public.
