The Creative Writing minor trains students to effectively communicate innovative ideas in poetry and prose.

Creative Writing minor requirements

To graduate with a minor in Creative Writing from YHC, you’ll take 19 hours of coursework.

Lower Division Required Courses:

CRWT 2601 Creative Writing across the Genres

In addition to studying models of excellent writing, students will practice writing original works and learn how to discuss literature cooperatively in a workshop setting. The course will cover a variety of literary genres including poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, playwriting or any combination these forms. This course may be repeated with the professor’s approval.

CRWT 3507 Developments in Prose

This course provides a close examination of topics related to the elements, forms, and history of prose across literary periods. Students will close read canonical and contemporary fiction and nonfiction as well as critical texts to explore and analyze the development of chosen topics in the craft.

CRWT 4601 Advanced Poetry Workshop

This intensive workshop provides advanced students the opportunity to write and revise a significant body of work. The focus of the workshop is on developing a polished portfolio of poetry. This course may be repeated with the professor’s approval.
