Young Harris College Presents Samuel Barber’s Classical “Love at the Door”
YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College is pleased to present the story of youth, innocence, and love in American composer Samuel Barber’s “Love at the Door” on Thursday, Feb. 2, at 7 p.m. in the Susan B. Harris Chapel on the YHC campus. The performance is free and open to the public.
Featuring Karen Sigers, piano, and Benjamin Schoening, of the University of North Georgia, lyric baritone, Christina Howell, of Clayton State University, soprano, and Jonathan Pilkington, of Piedmont College, tenor, the program presents Barber favorites such as “The Monk and His Cat,” “Nocturne,” “Sure on this Shining Night,” and his legendary “Dover Beach.”
Opening with Barber’s iconic setting of the recollection of youth and a simpler time in “Knoxville: Summer of 1915,” the program moves through aspects of love sought after and found by the exploration of piety, the despair of abandonment, and the return of hope in experiencing passion. An epilogue of Barber’s last three songs will close the evening by asking what manner of love has dominated life in a moment of sheer humor regarding cows and pianos followed by the affirmation that life and love go on into the boundless evening.
