Young Harris Community,
It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the passing of a great friend to Young Harris College, Dr. Clay Dotson. After a period of declining health, Dr. Dotson succumbed to his illness over the weekend at the age of 86.
Dr. Dotson’s dedication to Young Harris College was unwavering. He served in various roles for over 40 years, leaving an indelible mark as a history professor, academic dean, and interim president in 1990. Even after retiring in 2000, his commitment to YHC was evident when he returned as interim president in 2003-2004 at the request of Board Chair Paul Beckham and the Board of Trustees.
Dr. Dotson was a servant leader and demonstrated the highest levels of integrity in everything he undertook. Since arriving in 1961, he has given unselfishly of his time and resources to the College and the Towns County community.
The Clay Dotson Open, named in honor of Dr. Dotson’s love for the game, has become a significant event at YHC. This year’s tournament, the largest to date, saw 235 players come together and raise more than $130,000 for student scholarships. The Open will continue to be held, a testament to Dr. Dotson’s enduring legacy and commitment to supporting students at YHC.
Dr. Dotson will be sorely missed by all who have had the privilege of knowing him. Young Harris College is a better place because of Clay Dotson.
Please keep the Dotson family in your thoughts and prayers during this time. A celebration of life service will be scheduled later this fall.
