START Orientation

All incoming first-year and transfer students are required to attend START Orientation.

The START program is designed to help ensure a smooth transition to Young Harris College for both students and their families. There are sessions hosted throughout orientation to support students’ holistic and comprehensive needs.

After attending START, you’ll be ready to begin your journey at YHC!

SUMMER ORIENTATION

Students spend two days learning about life at YHC and preparing to become YHC students at summer orientation (START).

Students will meet other incoming students and current student leaders while at START. Staff and faculty will help students understand the academic and social expectations of being a YHC student. Students will meet with faculty and staff at the College and learn about the programs, services, and events available to them at YHC. Finally, students will get a sense of what it means to be a YHC community member.

In April, if an incoming student has paid his/her tuition deposit, information about START Summer Orientation is mailed. If students register to START (a required activity for incoming students), they will receive an email about the orientation including when to arrive, where to check in, what to expect, and what to bring.

There is an optional overnight trip sponsored by YHC Outdoor Adventures. Past trips have included whitewater rafting, tubing, zip lining, kayaking and paintball. Students may sign up for the trip when registering for START orientation.

Family members are welcome to join us on campus for the one-day Family Orientation (summer only) as well as our annual Family Weekend each fall semester.

If you have any questions about START and student and family orientation programming, please read the FAQs.

SPRING ORIENTATION

Spring orientation has been intentionally designed to help students transitioning mid-year learn about life at YHC and prepare them to become YHC students. Students will finalize class registration and will determine any next steps that must be addressed prior to the start of classes.

Starting in early December, once an incoming student has paid their tuition deposit, information about START Orientation is mailed out. Approximately one week prior to attending orientation, students will receive an email with information about when to arrive, where to check-in, what to expect, and what to bring.

Welcome week

Welcome Week begins the Saturday evening before classes begin each fall semester. Welcome Week focuses on getting new students connected to the YHC community and setting the tone for the semester. During this time, new students will learn ways to get involved on and off campus and check in with various campus offices to ensure they have completed all the necessary enrollment tasks (parking pass, finalize health records, etc.).

Welcome Week activities are required for all first-year students. Transfer students are encouraged, but not required, to attend.

YHC Bucket List

The campus community created a "YHC Bucket List" featuring the top 100 things all Young Harris College students should do before graduation. You can view the list here.

For more information about any of these events, please contact Jaime Miller at jsmiller@yhc.edu or (706) 379-5028.
